The development of rail networks is a crucial factor in providing the public with an efficient, safe and sustainable travel mode. As part of a global consultancy with a broad industry focus, Maunsell is experienced in integrating transport planning, design, advisory, engineering and environmental disciplines through our wide ranging rail operational performance and time-tabling skills.
The Auckland rail network carries freight, increasing numbers of commuter passenger services, a small number of long distance passenger services, and some steam and diesel excursion trains. A programme of rail service improvements and infrastructure upgrades (including electrification) is being put in place to increase capacity and improve service levels.
Auckland Rail Electrification
Maunsell has secured the contract for the traction design, including technical support and procurement management to electrify the Auckland rail network which, including double tracks, represents about 170 kilometres of track.
Electrification of the Auckland rail network includes the following routes;
- North Island Main Trunk Line (Papakura to Britomart);
- North Auckland Line (Westfield to Swanson);
- Newmarket Branch Line;
- Onehunga Branch Line;
- Manukau Branch Line; and
- various yards, maintenance depots and sidings.
Project DART: Developing Auckland's Rail Transport – Principle Design Organisation Contract
Project DART is a series of improvements to Auckland's rail network which will deliver more frequent and reliable passenger services and improve pedestrian safety around the rail network. Maunsell is assisting ONTRACK with engineering design services for rail projects within the Auckland Metro Network.
The 2006 Budget included funding of up to $600million to fund these improvements and speed development of the Auckland rail network. The project is being carried out over a three year period from 2006 - 2009 and is the most significant redevelopment of the rail network in New Zealand since the 1980s.
As the Principal Design Organisation (PDO) Maunsell is the lead consultant responsible for managing a range of projects including feasibility, concept, detailed design and construction documentation, and if required by the Client, construction monitoring the designed works through to their completion.
Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) – New Lynn Railway Station
Maunsell are providing project management services associated with the design and development of an underground railway station and integrated passenger transport hub. These services have extended to the development of an ‘Underground Station Design Strategy’ specifically relating to ventilation and fire life safety.
Kapiti Railway Stations Concept Design Project
Maunsell have recently completed a ‘Scoping Study’ for the development of railway stations within the Kapiti District of the Greater Wellington region. The study has lead to the concept design of new and upgraded railway stations that will form an integral part of the Trans Metro passenger network extension to Waikanae.
Wellington Regional Rail Plan
Working in collaboration with the Greater Wellington Regional Council, Maunsell are developing a strategy for the long term enhancement of the region’s rail network. The outcomes will deliver a 30 year investment programme.
